Talking to Your Loved One About Home Care

Tuesday, May 26th, 2026  2:00 pm - 3:00 pm (EDT)

Having conversations about home care with an aging loved one is one of the most important — and most challenging — discussions a family can face. In this workshop, we provide compassionate, practical guidance to help you navigate this sensitive topic with understanding, confidence, and care. Learn how to recognize the signs that home care support is needed, how to approach the conversation thoughtfully, and how to address your loved one's fears and concerns with empathy. Because having the right conversation at the right time can change everything. Learn how taking the next steps to incorporate home care can support a well-lived life. From reducing risks such as falls and hospitalization to fostering companionship, meaningful activity, and emotional engagement, it addresses your loved one's whole-person well-being.

Topics Include:
  • Recognizing the Signs — Identifying the physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral indicators that signal it may be time to explore home care support for your loved one
  • Approaching the Conversation — Practical strategies for initiating sensitive discussions with empathy, using the right setting, timing, and language to foster openness and trust
  • Involving Your Loved One in the Decision — How to honor your loved one's autonomy by making them an active participant in care planning, reducing resistance and building confidence in the process
  • Addressing Fears & Encouraging Ongoing Dialogue — Tools for navigating concerns about independence, safety, and change — and how to keep the lines of communication open throughout the caregiving journey

She served as an active member of Food Policy Councils and the Massachusetts Food is Medicine statewide planning and advocacy Steering Committee, regularly providing policy and legislative testimony at local, state, and federal levels.
